Pray and Fast for Three Abortion Activists This Lent

Last year the Pro-Life Action League encouraged pro-lifers to give up one meal a week for the conversion of an abortion worker. This year, we’re taking it to the next level.

This Lent, we’re encouraging prayer and fasting for three specific abortion activists—three women deeply entrenched and ideologically committed to abortion.

These women are pro-choice journalist Robin Marty, abortion clinic escort Katie Klabusich and abortionist Cheryl Chastine. We’re asking you to pray every day and offer the sacrifice of one meal a week for them during the season of Lent, which begins today.

A Journalist, an Activist, and an Abortionist

The Pro-Life Action League has had interactions with each of these women in the recent past. Robin interviewed League executive director Eric Scheidler extensively last year for a book she’s working on, as well as me for a piece on a correspondence I sent to Cheryl Chastine offering to talk to her and encouraging her to quit the abortion business.

Katie has been an abortion clinic escort in Chicago, though she now lives in New York. Last year League staffer Matt Yonke called her out on claiming our photos of abortion victims are doctored, and she replied with a post full of vitriol and misinformation. She’s also written disparagingly about League-trained sidewalk counselors on her recent visits to Chicago.

Cheryl is an abortionist who was recruited to perform abortions at the former clinic of notorious late-term abortionist George Tiller. When the League discovered her involvement in the newly-reopened clinic, we mounted several protests of her family practice office in the Chicago area. Though I tried multiple times to contact her personally to talk, we received no reply. She has since been fired from the family practice and is working full-time at Tiller’s old abortuary in Wichita.

Here are five reasons why these women, and all abortion advocates, need our prayers and fasting this Lent:

1. God Uses Pro-Lifers’ Prayers to Draw People Out of the Abortion Industry

Many former abortion workers and supporters have told stories of how the prayers of pro-lifers played a role in their quitting the business.

Former Planned Parenthood clinic director Abby Johnson has talked at length about the impact the prayers of 40 Days for Life participants had on her conversion.

Former abortionist Joy Davis had this to say:

I fell into a deep depression. I felt like if I did what was right by stopping the negligence and by stopping everything that we were doing that it would ease my pain. But it didn’t. My pain got worse.

But I then remembered two people that were sidewalk counselors in front of our clinics. They were very, very much against what we did, but they loved me. And when I had no one else I could turn to, I called them. I told them that I couldn’t face another day, that I needed help. And she said, “Joy, what you need is God.” She told me how God loved me. How he died for my sins. She prayed the most beautiful prayer I had ever heard, a heat ran all the way through my body. I was on fire and I fell to my knees and begged God to forgive me.

And He did forgive me. My life changed that day. The nightmares went away.

Your prayers can be a part of that kind of miracle this Lent, though even if we don’t see those kinds of dramatic conversions, we know our prayers are never wasted.

2. Christ says prayer and fasting are our strongest weapons

In the gospels, Our Lord Jesus Christ is clear that there are some spiritual problems that cannot be overcome out without prayer and fasting.

Christ used these tools in His own preparation for His ministry in His 40 days in the desert. Whenever we see deep spiritual conflict in the Scriptures, prayer and fasting is never far away.

There is no greater spiritual evil in our day than abortion, and if we’re going to fight it and draw its supporters to the truth, prayer and fasting must be in our arsenal.

3. Praying and Fasting for Abortion Advocates is Good for OUR Souls

Praying and fasting for abortion advocates helps us remember their value as children of God. As St. Paul says, we don’t struggle against flesh and blood. Abortion advocates are not our enemy.

They are irrepeatable human beings who God desires to come to a knowledge of the truth. Praying and fasting for them helps us remember that we were once just as lost in sin, and without God’s grace, we still would be. On the front lines, we can be tempted, out of frustration or discouragement, to give up on the abortion advocates. Praying for them helps us to avoid this temptation.

4. If Pro-Lifers Don’t Pray for Abortion Advocates, Who Will?

It is a great spiritual tragedy that there are many people in the world who have nobody to pray for them. People whose plight is unknown or hidden need an advocate. In the movie, Gravity, Sandra Bullock’s character, makes a profound statement as she considers her own imminent death. ” No one will pray for my soul,” she says. What a sad thought.

Sometimes it’s easy to feel animosity towards abortion advocates. How could they participate in such great evil?

But as we said above, these people are souls that God desires to share eternity with, and our prayers can help in that process. And if we who are keenly aware of the problem of abortion don’t offer those prayers, who will? Don’t let these abortion advocates be left without prayer.

5. Jesus’ Prayer on the Cross

As He was dying on the cross, Our Lord prayed perhaps the most profound prayer of mercy ever uttered: “Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

For the very men who had mocked Him, beaten Him, stripped Him and driven nails into His hands and feet, He prayed for mercy.

Certainly they knew they were doing these things, but aside from God’s grace, they could not see the significance of their actions.

So too with abortion activists, unless God grants them eyes to see their unborn brothers and sisters for who they are—eternal creatures made in the image and likeness of God—they will not see.

We pray that even if we don’t see the fruit of conversion in this life, that God will grant them the grace of final repentance before they face eternity.

OK. I will pray that they have wonderful, fulfilling lives and accomplish all of their goals. I will pray that they have love, and a roof over their heads, and food on the table, and healthcare if they need it. God, if you’re listening, take good care of my sisters. Amen.

Oh yeah, and keep abortion safe and legal, just in case someone I love needs one. Thanks.

Yes, I will definitely pray and fast for these women. Let us remember and be inspired by the story of Blessed Bartolo Longo. Although raised in a pious household, he fell away from the faith in the university and ultimately became a Satanic priest and turned many Catholics away from the Church and to the occult. But he was converted through the prayers of his family and friends, and a family friend helped him turn away from Satan. Bl. Bartolo spent the rest of his life promoting the Rosary, warning others of the dangers of the occult, and caring for abandoned/unwanted children and orphans in Italy. It was largely thanks to him and his work that Italians rejected the notion that the children of criminals would become bad people.

Blessed Bartolo Longo, please pray for these women and all like them!

Your vitriol won’t get you anywhere here. Been there, done that, and let me tell you it doesn’t work in the end. I was just as naive and foolish like you as an early feminist for many, many decades–it doesn’t work gals. I deeply regret my abortion. So keep hurting women. Go you. Will add you on to my fast & prayers.

Thank you & God Bless Ann, Kristine and Valerie.

I pray for the safety of these women from the whack-a-doodle righwing nutjobs who use their “god” to justify harassment and stalking of women at health clinics, to bombing and murdering people.

Get a life, folks, and leave the rest of us sane people alone. My goddess is just fine with women owning their own bodies and making any and all medical decisions concerning those bodies.

Have you somehow forgotten there is an element of your movement that uses BOMBS? If you care about life, why don’t you try not singling out people’s names and faces in a community where people will do extreme and awful things. You’ve put their lives in danger. I hope you realize that.

Who will pray for Katie, Robin and Dr. Chastain? Me. I thank God for their commitment and service to women and their families. And I thank God my church and my denomination STRONGLY support Reproductive Justice and STRONGLY Trust Women. To pray for someone against their will and with malicious intent, as this so-called Pro-Life Action League is doing is an act of spiritual violence. This spiritual violence legitimizes and incites physical violence and intentionally puts the targeted lives at risk. There is nothing “pro-life” about painting targets on people’s backs and summoning the attention of domestic terrorists. For this act of terror on each of these three people I am donating $50 to an Emergency Abortion Fund and requesting the acknowledgement be sent to Pro-Life Action League. I will continue to do so for each person that is named every time he or she is named. Please add my name to the so-called Pro-Life Action League distribution list, so I’ll get that so-called Pro-Life information as soon as it goes out.

I am so grateful that as a graduate student, in a secular University, I was able to take 2 courses in Human Embryology. During our first lecture our professor said, “This is a life- totally separate from the mother- and to destroy it is murder.” There is no discussion. I received a Master of Science degree back in 1980. Truth is truth and cannot be changed.

I, a pro-choice Christian, will. I will pray for their safety, their health, and their strength. I will pray that the harassment against them will stop, and that violence against abortion providers will end. I pray that all choice advocates are able to stand up to your harassment.

If you have an issue with that, well, take it to Jesus.

  16. Tiberius Kirk says:

Praying and fasting for someone does not require you to post their faces. This isn’t about praying, nor is it about fasting. It’s about targeting; it’s about harassment. What you should pray for is that none of your Jesus-juiced mentally unhinged members heed your dog whistle and hurt them.

I will be honored to pray for each of these women and their families. I will especially ask God to show them how much he loves each of them, and send people into their lives to show them the more excellent way during this Lenten season. The more excellent way is to become a follower of Christ, receive the Sacrament of Holy Baptism (if you haven’t already been baptized already), and then join a good church.

  18. Mary Hathorne says:

We will pray for these three young women that their hearts will be open to the Holy Spirit and the truth will be revealed to them just like so many who have left the abortion industry. As one abortionist stated, “as I had done so many times, I was making sure I had got all the body parts, the spine, arms, legs, kidneys, etc. Then it dawned on me this was a human being. I knew from that moment on, I couldnot perform another abortion. I had to leave.”
St. Michael, the archangel, pray for us.

  19. Silvy says:

Abortion is murder. Put it into your thick skulls- Pro choice advocates wake up because one day you will look at God in the eyes. Change your ways while you can otherwise pay the consequences for your actions which go against that of your CREATOR who is a God of love not death. You should thank all those good souls of good will who pray for pro-choicers instead of calling them harassers. God only can perform this miracle – pro lifers are just helping God to make pro-choicers change their ways if it’s in HIS will. AMEN

  20. Another Carol says:

Reading all the posts from the pro-abortion commenters is really sad. It’s sad to me that they view abortion as ‘supporting women’. As a women, I think we deserve better than abortion. As someone who prays the rosary out in front of clinics I see women come out white as a sheet, barely able to walk and frequently weeping and mourning over their loss. As someone who has been out in front of clinics everywhere I’ve lived, so in three different states, I can tell you the think that I hear from women, over and over and over again, as they go into the clinics is “I don’t have a choice”. This is supporting women? Really? The pro-aborts are posting here preaching about women’s choice but do they talk to the women going into clinics? Do you know about their lives? If you think they want abortion and that they see it as a solution, my guess is no. I do trust women. A lot. I’m confused why that keeps coming up. You know who doesn’t trust women are the abortionists. Why for example don’t the abortionists show women their ultrasounds? Why don’t they want the woman to read the pre-natal information I’ve try to offer out in front of clinics? Don’t you trust women? I do. I know women who have talked to be about their decision and many of them welcome the information I have. I’m respectful, realistic and never coerce anyone and frequently appreciate information offered to them. If they don’t want to talk to me I leave them alone. Always. But I trust them and it seems to me if abortionists really trusted women they wouldn’t be threatened by truth and information.

It is also really sad to me that you see what these women are doing as some noble thing. A doctor takes a woman’s money and kills her baby and you think that’s noble? She probably lives very well off the money she takes for killing these women’s babies. There is nothing noble in supporting abortion as a writer or in any other way. It’s sad to me this women became a doctor and now kills for a living. And the other two cheer her along. Sad all the way around.

So to all you pro-abortion people out there know that you are losing the battle for hearts when it comes to the abortion issue. Many of us are tired of the antiquated arguments that if you support women you support abortion. Or that if you don’t support completely innocent totally defenseless babies from being killed you don’t trust women and you want to hold them back and hurt them and their families (isn’t the unborn baby part of the family too?). This tired-out, old rhetoric just doesn’t fit with what science has learned over the last 40 years. If you really want to support indiscriminate killing of babies that are inconvenient that’s one thing, but you’re going to have to sell it another way because the old arguments just don’t work anymore.

And yes, I will pray for these three women. Some of you have assigned malice to this gesture but let me assure you we are very genuine and sincere in our prayer efforts. Each of these three women has the same God given dignity that I have; and so do the unborn babies. Every pro-life person I know condemns all violence against clinics and all the workers and staff. Anyone who condones any violence against them is NOT pro-life. Period. You don’t understand us and why we turn things over to God and pray. Maybe you don’t want to understand. I don’t know. I may take a miracle to change a heart and soften it to the idea that women need real help and not abortion. But we serve the God of miracles. Everything thrives when it is loved – from house plants on up. Praying for someone is an act of love. Please accept our prayers with the spirit with which they are intended.

I will pray that these three women find God in their hearts and change their pro-choice position. I was pro-choice I had an abortion in 1972. I regret my decision every day but I was pro-choice for 25 more years until the day I saw my grandsons’ ultrasound at 6 weeks. Guess what there was a baby in my womb there was life. God has forgiven me but I have not. My heart is heavy and bears this burden of sin. Don’t make my mistake.

I totally agree with “another Carol”. For 20 years I stood in front of an abortion mill and offered help to the girls going in and never once did I harass these girls, but we offered them real help for as long as they would need it. We had many girls that came to the pregnancy helpline for a free abortion and it was when they saw their baby on the ultrasound that they chose life. We would then give them huge baby showers and to this day I get alot of Christmas cards from some of them with pictures of their children inside, thanking me again for their choice that they made that day to have their baby. Last year I was asked to be a sponsor for a little boy who was receiving his first communion. One of the girls had a set of twins and they are now almost 8 yrs old. Every now and then her salary on her job does not cover the bills so she calls on us and we are able to help her. One bill was $900 and we got that together in just 2 days so she could pay her electric bill. We promised them that we would be there for them for as long as they needed us. And by the way, they always ask us for our prayers for them.

I will certainly pray for these three of God’s children. “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do!” Soften their hearts to the truth of what they advocate. From speaking to women who have had such a procedure, it is clear to me that the ravages of abortion, even “safe” abortion, does NOT leave the mother unscathed – and for good reason. Heaven help them! God is all-forgiving!

We pray for the clinic escort that she will stop taking unborn children to their deaths and see that the pictures we show are not trick photography. We pray especially for the conversion of the abortionist that she will stop killing unborn children and use her medical skills to save and preserve life instead of destroying the lives of unborn children and their mothers. We pray for an end to the culture of death and for the building up of the culture of life. Amen

Check out prochoiceviolence.com which gives some of the histories of violent abortionists and clinic workers which are routinely suppressed by the media (one poll of them showed 97% were prochoice). On this site, find out also, about women who refused to be coerced into abortion who were murdered by partners. Know that murder of pregnant American women, is one of the major causes of death during pregnancy. This used not to be the case before the “choice” meme was spread around. Go to the website, founded by post abortive women, called: ‘Silent No More Awareness Campaign’, to read hundreds of testimonies of women (and some men who cooperated) that aborted their children. Read the book ‘Victims and Victors’, which tells stories of 187 women who were pregnant as a result of violence, some that kept babies and some that had abortions. What are YOU doing on behalf of women in India and China who are terrorized into abortion and sterilization – if you really care about women’s rights?

  29. Lunabelle says:

I will pray that these women have the strength to continue their mission in the face of your hatred and shaming. I will pray that expanding access to birth control and honest, open sex education reduce the need for women to seek abortions. I will pray that the courts uphold protection from harassment outside of clinics. I will pray that abortion remains safe, legal and accessible to women everywhere. I will pray for women to always have autonomy over what goes on in their own bodies. I will pray, I will volunteer my time, and I will donate my money to ensure that choice is not taken away.

    Amen.
