Chicago Civic CenterToday in League HistoryDecember 21, 1987—League Director Joe Scheidler is alerted that Chicago city employees are demolishing a privately-sponsored Nativity scene at Daley Plaza (pictured left). The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) had complained about the crèche. Joe races downtown with several staff members to intervene, saving several statues, including those of Mary and Baby Jesus. Pro-lifers would guard the statues for three days before a federal judge blocks the City from proceeding with the demolition.
