Mayor Breaks Word, Imposes Deadline

In the early morning hours of Wednesday, August 29, after nearly six hours of statements from the public calling for an investigation of Planned Parenthood’s dealings with the City of Aurora, Mayor Thomas Weisner promised an open, thorough, independent investigation with no deadline. Here’s the Mayor telling me that no deadline would be imposed on the investigation into Planned Parenthood’s dealings with the City:

And here’s the memo [PDF] he sent out to the City Council late Friday, imposing a September 12 deadline.

The memo also tags Aldermen-at-Large Richard Irvin and Bob O’Connor to select at new independent investigator, as the attorney originally chosen by Weisner was objected to by four Aldermen; that is to say, a third of the Council (the Mayor calls them a “small minority”). O’Connor is on record in the Aurora Beacon News saying that there is not enough time to select an investigator to complete the investigation by the Mayor’s deadline, and I understand that Richard Irvin isn’t even back from the Labor Day holiday until tomorrow. And so, I believe we have no choice but to do the following:

  1. Call Mayor Weisner at 630-264-4636 and e-mail him to respectfully but firmly request that the September 12 deadline be lifted.
  2. Call the City Clerk at 630-844-3615 and sign up to speak at the September 11 City Council Meeting about the investigation into PP. Do it today: we want the Mayor to realize by the end of the day today that we’re coming back.

Stay tuned for developments.
