Statement of a Lack of Principles

55 Democratic members of the House of Representatives, all of whom call themselves Catholic, made news last week when they issued what they called an “Historic” Statement of Principles, in which they acknowledge that they are in “disagreement with the Church in some areas” — namely, abortion — but still claim to be “committed to making real the basic principles that are at the heart of Catholic social teaching.” The hypocrisy of these allegedly Catholic politicians is so great, I hardly know where to begin. So, I won’t say much myself. Instead, I’ll include some remarks by Father Tom Euteneuer, president of Human Life International. Father Euteneuer pulls no punches — exactly what you would expect from a prayerful, holy priest who is a former Marine, an experienced pro-life activist, and an exorcist:

The House Democrat so-called “Statement of Principles’ is nothing more than Washington-speak for: “We support abortion on demand and we do not care what the Church teaches.” The House Democrats even go so far as offering a veiled threat. The document concludes with: “We have a claim on the Church’s bearing…” It is appalling to read 55 elected officials threaten to use the power of their office to coerce the Catholic Church. The House Democrats who signed the “Statement of Principles” have made it clear that they have chosen loyalty to their party’s platform supporting abortion on demand over their church’s teachings on the sanctity of life and the dignity of the unborn child…
