The Late Sen. Simon’s Abortion Record [Letter to the Editor]

League National Director Joseph M. Scheidler submitted the following Letter to the Editor to the local press following the death of former Senator from Illinois Paul Simon:

Having read myriads of eulogies about former Senator Paul Simon, and all the good work he did as a public official, and having stored them all away in my Paul Simon file, I offer a footnote that may interest your readers.

Sen. Paul Simon was a solid pro-abortion vote throughout his career. With the exception of one vote during his freshman congressional term, he consistently voted to fund abortions, both at home and overseas, with our tax money. He consistently defended his pro-abortion stand, was endorsed by the radically pro-abortion National Organization for Women (who sued me for being pro-life), and the National Abortion Rights Action League (now NARAL Pro-Choice America). He co-sponsored the Freedom of Choice Act of 1990.

In l992 he hosted a seminar on abortion in order to bring the French abortion pill, RU-486, to America. It came, and at least two women have died taking it, not to mention the thousands of unborn babies who have been aborted by it.

The record goes on and on, but what’s the use? The fact is, while Paul Simon was supporting abortion, the American people began to see through this kind of homicide, and today more than half of Americans firmly oppose abortion.

The glowing obituaries that have blossomed forth at Sen. Simon’s death have praised his concern for the less fortunate and disenfranchised — the “little guy.” What a shame that Sen. Simon, with all his dedication to public service, cared nothing for the most helpless little ones of all: innocent unborn children. God rest his soul.

Respectfully,
Joseph M. Scheidler
National Director
