Yesterday, Mother Teresa was named “Blessed” by Pope John Paul II. Over a quarter of a million people packed themselves into St. Peter’s square for her beatification. Not only was she a missionary of charity to the poorest of the poor in Calcutta, but she was a missionary to the poorest of the poor here in America.
Blessed Teresa, Pray for Us
While we may not be materially poor in the United States, we are, as the Great Mother put it, “spiritually poor.” At her speech at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington D.C. in 1994, Mother Teresa said, “Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use any violence to get what they want. This is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion.”
Let us invoke the intercession of Blessed Mother Teresa to help end the scourge of abortion in this country.
Youth Outreach at Work
The last week has been a busy one for the League’s youth outreach, Generations for Life. I have been out to four different schools and parishes within the last week spreading the pro-life, pro-chastity message. Being with the teens allows me the opportunity to touch base with the culture in which our young people are growing up.
Sometimes it’s very rewarding. At one of my talks a young girl told me that although she had had sex, she is going save herself for marriage and go to confession!
At other times it can be heartbreaking. One young girl told me about her cousin who at 14 was forced by her parents to have an abortion. Now 18, she’s still hurting. The young woman wanted to know what she could do to help her cousin.
Dangers of the Pill
Another disturbing thing was the overwhelming number of young women who told me they have been put on the birth control pill to deal with menstrual cramps. There are plenty of safe, healthy ways to regulate a woman’s cycle and relieve her of PMS or menstrual cramps without the detrimental effects of the Pill.
If you know anyone who is on the Pill, even if it is for menstrual cramps, please let them know about its dangerous effects such as increased risk of breast and cervical cancer, depression and reduced fertility. For more information on the Pill, please call me at 773-304-LIFE (5433).
Feed Your Teens with Truth
Also call, or use our request form, if you are interested in having me or my assistant Mary Shine come out to your parish or junior or senior high school to speak on the pro-life, pro-chastity message. Our young people need to hear the truth about abortion and the freedom that comes from living chastity. First hand experience tells me that they are hungry for the truth!
