November 5, 1981—League Director Joe Scheidler flies to Washington, DC, for a hearing on the Hyde Amendment, which would ban the use of federal funds for abortions. The Hyde Amendment was originally attached to the appropriations bill in 1976 and was found to be constitutional by the Supreme Court in 1980. In order to remain in effect it must be attached to the yearly appropriations bill.
