Louisiana Bill Proposes Complete Abortion Ban, No Exceptions

Seal of Louisiana

Kate Sheppard reports at Mother Jones on a bill introduced in the Louisiana legislature that would ban abortion outright with no exceptions.

Even the traditional loopholes for rape, incest or the life of the mother (which make up about 1% of all abortions) would be done away with if this bill passes. And given that the Louisiana legislature has a strong pro-life sentiment, it has a very good chance of doing just that.

The bill, which would impose prison time of up to 15 years with hard labor for a crime it calls “feticide,” would punish the doctors performing the abortions, not the women seeking them.

If the bill does pass, abortion advocates have already sworn to take it to court, and that’s actually what the bill’s chief sponsor, State Rep. John LaBruzzo, has said he wants to see.

Political Posturing, or Long-Range Planning?

Julie Mickelberry, spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood of the Gulf Coast, has tried to portray this strategy as disingenuous, saying that LaBruzzo doesn’t want to stop abortions, but that the bill is “purely political.”

This is, of course, ridiculous. The political strategy at play here has one goal: to challenge an abortion ban all the way up to the US Supreme Court so that Roe v. Wade could be overturned with the end result of ending abortion in America.

While it’s unlikely that this bill will be the decisive end of abortion in America, its very existence shows that the American people are fed up with abortion on demand being right up there with life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as one of the crowning freedoms cherished in American society.

Change will come as more and more Americans wake up to the horror of abortion, and in the meantime, we’ll continue to stop abortion on the front lines with prayer, direct activism and sidewalk counseling.
