Abortions at Planned Parenthood on the Rise—Again

PP dollarsLast week, Planned Parenthood Federation of America released a fact sheet [PDF] detailing the services they provided nationwide in 2008.

True to its moniker, Abortion, Incorporated reported that its total number of abortions was up 6.1% from the previous year: 324,008 abortions in 2008 compared to 305,310 in 2007 [PDF]. (In 2006 [PDF], Planned Parenthood’s number of total abortions was 289,750.)

In the document, Planned Parenthood boasts of having provided educational programs to more than 1.2 million people of all ages and in all types of settings, including preschools.

“Emergency Contraception” Not Lowering PP’s Abortion Rate

A couple of other interesting figures emerge from the report — one regarding so-called emergency contraception, which Planned Parenthood is definitely not shy about recommending (“No matter how old you are, if you are sexually active, it’s always a good idea to have some emergency contraception on hand ahead of time”).

For each of the last three years, the number of EC kits distributed to Planned Parenthood clients has been nearly the same, ranging from 1,423,365 to 1,436,846.

If all of these millions of megadoses of the regular birth control pill were so effective, wouldn’t one could expect to see Planned Parenthood’s abortion figures go down and not up?

Unless, of course, emergency contraception isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

More Condoms = Fewer Abortions?

Also interesting is Planned Parenthood’s figures on “Reversible Contraception Clients, Men” (read: the number of men they gave condoms to). This figure has increased each of the last 3 years, from 95,188 in 2006 to 102,405 in 2007 to 109,823 in 2008.

Once again, one might expect that with as often as the “Use condoms!” message is peddled, increased condom usage would correlate with a lower abortion rate.

But again, considering the fact that condoms are, of course, not 100% effective at preventing pregnancy in the first place, along with alarmingly high rates of imperfect use, and the fact that Planned Parenthood has a history of providing particularly low-quality condoms, this shouldn’t surprise anyone.

From Planned Parenthood’s own figures, it’s clear that their Bullwinkle Approach of “More contraception = less abortion” is utterly doomed to fail.
