Oppose the Repeal of Parental Notice of Abortion in Illinois

Urgent action is needed to stop HB 1797, a bill that would repeal our hard-won Parental Notification of Abortion law!

The so-called “Parental Notice of Abortion Repeal Act” which is currently making its way through the Illinois General Assembly would remove the widely supported, common-sense Parental Notice of Abortion Act which requires minor girls to notify a parent before obtaining an abortion

If passed, HB1797 will allow minor girls to receive abortions without their parents’ knowledge.

We have to fight this bill with everything we have, and right now, the best tool at our disposal is filing “witness slips” with the Human Services Committee, which currently has the bill.

How to File Your Witness Slip

A “witness slip” is a statement of support or opposition that you can make in lieu of actually attending a committee hearing.

Any Illinois resident 13 or older can take a stand by filing Witness Slips with the Illinois General Assembly, but you must submit them before this bill is heard at the Human Services committee hearing on Tuesday, March 23 at 3:00 p.m.

You do not need to attend any hearing in Springfield in order to file a witness slip expressing your view.

Here’s how to file your witness slip:

  1. Fill in the identification section. Unless you are representing an organization, write “Self” in the “Firm/Business or Agency,” “Title,” and “Representation” fields.
  2. Mark yourself as an “Opponent” of the bill under the Position section. Under the Testimony section, click “Record of Appearance Only”. You do not need to attend any hearing in Springfield in order to file a witness slip expressing your view.
  3. Click “Create(Slip)” and your witness slip will be filed with the state. You will receive a confirmation email at the address you provided.
