March 11, 1989—During a Rescue in Chico, California, League Director Joe Scheidler is arrested by a belligerent police officer. First the officer tells Joe he can’t stand on the sidewalk, then when Joe steps into the street, the officer tells him he can’t stand in the street. Joe asks, “Do you expect me to hover?” and the officer arrests him. When Joe asks what he’s being arrested for, the officer says, “I’ll think of something.” Joe spends most of the day in jail and is released that evening. A reporter interviewing Joe at the time of the conflict with the officer is not arrested.
