Illinois Attorney General Neil HartiganToday in League HistoryOctober 15, 1989—League Director Joe Scheidler urges callers to his Action News Hotline to call Illinois Attorney General Neil Hartigan (pictured at right) to tell him to butt out and to let the U.S. Supreme Court hear Turnock v. Ragsdale, a case against notorious abortionist Richard Ragsdale for violations of state law at his Rockford abortuary. In his bid for governor, Hartigan had decided to abandon his pro-life base and court the “pro-choice” vote. Despite the outcry from pro-lifers, Hartigan would negotiate a settlement favorable to Ragsdale, effectively immunizing Illinois abortion clinics from having to conform to the same standards as other medical facilities.
