Tremendous outcry has arisen in the past year after it was learned that the national office of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development has been funding groups that promote abortion, contraception, same-sex “marriage” and even legalized prostitution.
It’s painfully obvious that the CCHD is in need of reform, and in Chicago, its local Archdiocesan office has taken that responsibility very seriously.
Chicago CCHD Director “on the Offensive for Reform”
Given the revelations about the CCHD’s history of supporting dubious organizations, it certainly has had its share of critics — as well it should. And to his great credit, Rey Flores, the new director of the Chicago CCHD office, has taken an irenic approach in reaching out to the most outspoken ones and asked them to suggest groups that they believe are deserving of grants from the Campaign.
A recent LifeSiteNews article spoke very favorably about the changes being made in the Chicago CCHD office under Flores’ leadership and noted that the reforms he is instituting locally would serve as a great example for the CCHD to follow nationwide.
Under Flores’ leadership, the Chicago CCHD office has committed itself to de-funding any organization that opposes Catholic teaching — especially regarding life and family issues — and, instead, to giving grants to local pro-life groups.
As a result, for the first time ever, the League is receiving a grant this year to promote sidewalk counseling. Other first-time grantees include the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Chastity Education Initiative and two networks of pregnancy resource centers — Aid for Women and the Women’s Center.
Shortly after Flores was hired by the Archdiocese of Chicago last year, League National Director Joe Scheidler said:
We strongly urge you to give Rey Flores a chance. Change has to start somewhere and sometime. I believe that somewhere is Chicago and the sometime is now.
Given the yeoman’s work Flores has done thus far, we reiterate our support for him and the authentic reform he is bringing to the Chicago CCHD.
Join the League at Chicago CCHD Awards Event September 1
To this end, we invite you to join us at this year’s Chicago CCHD Awards Event on Wednesday, September 1 at St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish in Chicago [see map here]. The theme for the evening is, appropriately enough, “Take a whole new look at the CCHD!”
The event will be hosted by Relevant Radio executive director Father Frank “Rocky” Hoffman, and will feature Mass celebrated by Bishop Francis Kane, with a dinner and recognition of grantees to follow.
