At the invitation of Phil Sevilla, Joe and Ann Scheidler spoke at the first annual Project Defending Life (PDL) conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico on October 24 and 25. The theme of the ecumenical conference, held at Legacy Church, was Celebrate Life, Family and Marriage. Over 100 people heard presentations from the Scheidlers and other speakers, including Dr. Tony Levatino, Fr. Steve Imbarrato, and Legacy pastor Steve Smothermom.
The event included an evening youth rally for two hundred high school students. Each student received a copy of Sharing the Pro-Life Message, a gift from the Pro-Life Action League, to help the young people learn how to communicate their pro-life beliefs.

PDL has offices, including a crisis pregnancy center with ultrasound services, next door to Albuquerque’s Planned Parenthood abortion clinic. The Scheidlers visited the center when they arrived in Albuquerque. There they met Richard Collins, who had first met Joe at a pro-life Rescue in Colorado in the early 1990’s. When they arrived, Collins, who is in his 80’s, was praying before the Blessed Sacrament in the PDL chapel.
After his prayer hour, he picked up a poster bearing the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe and went to stand vigil in front of Planned Parenthood.
The Scheidlers joined Collins in prayer outside the Southwestern Women’s Options, a late-term abortion clinic run by Curtis Boyd, formerly of Dallas, Texas. Boyd was featured on the League’s Meet the Abortion Providers video in the testimony from Nita Whitten who had worked for Boyd. Boyd was a pioneer in second trimester D & E abortions.
