Lack of Oversight Gives Illinois Abortion Clinics a Pass

Posted by John Jansen (January 25, 2012 at 3:23 pm)

Illinois abortionA recent Associated Press article by writer Carla Johnson reported that some abortion clinics in Illinois have gone up to 15 years without an inspection, and that several other abortion clinics in the state—including all of those run by Planned Parenthood—aren’t licensed or inspected by the state at all.

In response to inquiries from Johnson, Pro-Life Action League Executive Director Eric Scheidler provided numerous documents obtained through Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests regarding abortion clinic inspections. He was also quoted in the article:

Anti-abortion activist Eric Scheidler, executive director of the Chicago-based Pro-Life Action League, said Illinois is “one of the most pro-abortion states in the nation” and he believes it gave the clinics “a pass.” The state has shown “a systematic unwillingness to step away from the ideology and look at these facilities objectively,” he said, calling for more stringent inspections.

The notorious Northern Illinois Women’s Center in Rockford just became the first abortion clinic in the U.S. to shut down in 2012.

A Rockford Register Star article posted just this afternoon confirmed that NIWC’s management has decided not to reopen after having its license suspended by the State of Illinois for over three months due to serious health violations.

Why did NIWC decide not to reopen? The article explains:

The clinic’s decision is based on a lack of support from the community, the political climate surrounding the abortion issue both locally and nationally and the challenge the clinic would face in rebuilding staff, the director said.

Take a look at these reasons again:

(1) A lack of support from the community. It’s not hard to see why the good people of Rockford want nothing to do with NIWC. A creepy looking place that doesn’t sterilize their instruments and has bizarre window displays featuring signs of Jesus giving the middle finger and saying, “Even Jesus hates you” isn’t the sort of place anyone would want in their backyard. Notorious Abortion Facility in Rockford, IL to Reopen, But When?

Several of us from the Pro-Life Action League attended a public hearing in Chicago this morning regarding the fate of Rockford, Illinois’ notorious Northern Illinois Women’s Center abortion facility, which was ordered closed by the Illinois Department of Public Health on September 29, and has remained closed since.

The hearing was called to order by Administrative Law Judge Cynthia Ramirez, who asked the parties in the case to identify themselves. Harold Hirschman, counsel for NIWC, and Eva Byerly, attorney for the Illinois Department of Public Health and representing the State of Illinois, did so. Judge Ramirez then noted that only the parties in the case were allowed to speak during the hearing.

Byerly told the judge that an agreement had been reached between the State and NIWC yesterday afternoon, and was signed this morning. Hirschman concurred.

Judge Ramirez then said that since an agreement had been reached, the case was dismissed.

The entire hearing lasted no more than two (2) minutes. Judge Ramirez then exited the conference room.

The reporters present were just as mystified as the rest of us, since they seemed to think there would be no story for them to report. They immediately approached Byerly and asked her about the details of the agreement, but she refused to comment, and then exited the conference room. [Continue reading ...]

Look Who’s Not Talking about the Closing of Rockford’s Abortuary

At a hearing this week, an administrative law judge ruled that one of the most bizarre, macabre abortion facilities in the country—Northern Illinois Women’s Center (NIWC), in Rockford—will remain closed until at least January 4.

NIWC had its license suspended and has been closed since September 30, after an inspection by the Department of Public Health earlier this year “found conditions that are directly threatening to the public health, safety and welfare requiring immediate, emergency action,” which the facility failed to correct by the time of a follow-up inspection conducted on September 15.

Thus, as of now, NIWC has been closed for two months, and it will be at least one more month until it’s allowed to reopen—if it’s allowed to reopen at all.

For obvious reasons, pro-life news outlets and bloggers have been closely following the NIWC saga. But take note of who is not talking about it:

One of the most bizarre, macabre abortion facilities in the country—Northern Illinois Women’s Center, in Rockford—has had its license indefinitely suspended by the State of Illinois.

According to a notice issued September 29 by the state’s Department of Public Health, an inspection conducted at NIWC June 6 through 8 “found conditions that are directly threatening to the public health, safety and welfare requiring immediate, emergency action.”

Although the facility was permitted to remain open while it received a plan of correction, a follow-up inspection conducted on September 15 found that the NIWC failed to clean up its act: [Continue reading ...]

Libelous signs placed by Rockford abortion facility staff to scare women away from pro-life mobile ultrasound

Due to the presence of the Northern Illinois Women’s Center — a particularly bizarre and macabre place, even by abortion facility standards — the city of Rockford, Illinois is unquestionably one of the nation’s abortion hot spots.

Outside NIWC, an indomitable group of pro-life activists have had numerous run-ins with police in recent years over their First Amendment rights to protest and sidewalk counsel — and, more recently, their efforts to park a mobile ultrasound unit on the public street in front of the deplorable facility, whose window displays include a rubber chicken attached to a Crucifix and a poster showing Jesus giving the middle finger, along with the inscription “Even Jesus Hates You.”

Yet despite strident opposition from some of the city’s powers that be, the Rockford pro-life community is continuing its push to get a permit for the mobile ultrasound unit. [Continue reading ...]

Pro-Abortion Vandalism Strikes Again in Rockford

Posted by John Jansen (November 11, 2010 at 3:49 pm)

billboardrockfordWe just received word from the Rockford (Illinois) Pro-Life Initiative that the pro-life billboard they erected November 1 was vandalized this week.

This incident is the latest in a series of obstacles that members of the Initiative have faced in recent years in their attempt to share the pro-life message.

Four years ago, a pro-life ad the group placed on a bus bench was repeatedly vandalized.

At Northern Illinois Women’s Center, the city’s sole abortion facility, members of the group have had numerous run-ins with police over their First Amendment rights to protest and sidewalk counsel — and, more recently, their efforts to have a mobile ultrasound they’ve tried to park on the public street in front of the particularly deplorable facility, whose window displays include a rubber chicken attached to a Crucifix and a poster showing Jesus giving the middle finger, along with the inscription “Even Jesus Hates You.” [Continue reading ...]

On Tuesday, August 10, the League will join forces with the Rockford Pro-Life Initiative for a Face the Truth Day in Rockford, Illinois.

This will be our 7th consecutive year visiting the city, which is unquestionably one of the nation’s abortion hot spots, due to the presence of the particularly bizarre and macabre — even by abortion facility standards — Northern Illinois Women’s Center.

Among the window displays at NIWC are a rubber chicken attached to a Crucifix and a poster showing Jesus giving the middle finger, along with the inscription “Even Jesus Hates You.” [Continue reading ...]
