Last night I joined a group of pro-life activists to “crash” the Illinois ACLU’s meeting in Chicago Heights, Illinois, touting its sensationalist “War on Contraception” agenda. Pro-lifers made up for at least seven of the 20 people in attendance.

The seminar was the second of three being held in three Chicago suburbs at health clubs, libraries, or other intentionally innocuous locations as part of the ACLU’s “Defending the Targets of Intolerance” series to stand up for supposedly “oppressed” groups including gays, lesbians, and women. Last Saturday a Chicago tradition continued. It was the 25th anniversary of the Chicago Nativity Scene in Daley Plaza. Cardinal Francis George was on hand to bless the crèche and several small children, including some of my grandchildren, helped to place the Baby Jesus in His manger.

The “God Squad” erected the stable and positioned the life-sized figures. The bell choir from Santa Maria Del Popolo in north suburban Mundelein, under the direction of Debbie Titus, accompanied carols—and the crowd loved it.

This is a sweet and nostalgic tradition. But it is one that only continues because of the perseverance of a few dedicated people who firmly believe in the First Amendment. [Continue reading ...]

Can Illinois Join Alaska?

Posted by Ann Scheidler (August 26, 2010 at 10:38 am)

parentalnoticeOn Wednesday the Ms. Magazine Blog reported, “Yesterday, the Alaskan primary ballot included a measure to institute a parental notification law for minors seeking abortions. Unfortunately, the law passed.”

That last sentence sums up the attitude of radical feminists, Planned Parenthood, the ACLU and others who seek the breakdown of the traditional family.

Rather than see parental involvement in an adolescent’s health care — in this case, surgery or drugs to kill her unborn baby — as a positive influence in a young girl’s life, they view a parent’s role as intrusive, if not downright abusive. [Continue reading ...]

Committee Passes Illinois FOCA Bill 5-2

Posted by Eric Scheidler (March 10, 2010 at 10:13 am)

Illinois CapitolThis morning, the Illinois House of Representatives Human Services Committee passed HB6205, the Illinois FOCA, on a vote of 5-2. Alicia Torres of the Archdiocese of Chicago Respect Life Office live-tweeted the hearing this morning and broke the disappointing news.

I don’t have information on who our two pro-life, pro-family, pro-sanity votes were, but I assume one of them was Republican Patricia R. Bellock, who raised numerous objections to the bill during the hearing. More details to come soon.

What this means is that the Illinois pro-life community must step up pressure on the entire House. Alicia reported that many Representatives attended the hearing. They’re clearly interested in this bill, which means they all need to hear from us again. And again. And again.
