It makes me very unhappy when I hear that someone is on the birth control pill, particularly when it’s “for health reasons”—as if disrupting your body’s natural functions with truck-loads of artificial hormones is ever healthy.
I was glad to see this article [pdf], published in the April 2011 edition of Solas, a magazine published by Youth Defence of Ireland.
In the article nurse Carolyn Johnston writes, “Birth control may be generally reliable, but it is far from safe.” In it she documents several recent cases of women who have died from taking the Pill. The deaths of these seemingly healthy women were surprising and shocking to their families, some of whom are taking the time to spread the word about the health dangers of the Pill.
This article [pdf] is definitely worth the read!

The Population Research Institute has put out a new video called “Project Real Need.” It’s less than two minutes, but worth watching.
A very good point they make: Funding to cure malaria is uncontroversial and is necessary, yet we give even greater amounts of money to “family planning” measures that are controversial, are sometimes not even wanted by the locals, and are not beneficial.
On a related note, I’m glad GlaxoSmithKline is on board trying to help cure Malaria. But giving Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria $131,000 [pdf] to do it is just a bad idea. Again, talk about money going to the wrong place.
Looks like there are a lot of places we need to improve our spending habits…

Buy a couple of signs, grab some friends, and stage your own protest!
We’re very excited to offer the League’s high quality protest signs for sale on our website.
We now have available the following four signs in our online store:
These signs are high quality and will last—we’ve brought them out in the rain and the snow and had no problems. They are printed on rugged coroplast so they won’t be destroyed by the wind. And they’re double sided, so people can read them whether you’re coming or going!
To order these signs, go to our online store or call us at 773-777-2900.
If ordering online scroll down within the “General Pro-Life Activism Materials” section until you see the icon showing the four available signs. You can choose from a multi pack (one of each of the four signs), or a five or ten pack of any one design.
If you’d like some other combination than is offered online, you can always call our office and place a special order for the same price per sign.
Happy protesting!
Monsignor Philip Reilly
Indomitable pro-life veteran and world renowned sidewalk counselor Monsignor Philip Reilly will visit the Chicago area on April 8-9 for a series of events focusing on the spiritual battle against abortion.
Msgr. Reilly has been active in the pro-life movement since 1967 — six years before Roe v. Wade — and in 1989, along with just four volunteers, he founded the Helpers of God’s Precious Infants outside the infamous Choices abortion center in Brooklyn, New York. Helpers Chapters now span across the United States and 18 countries worldwide.
Don’t miss this chance to learn from and pray with this holy priest!
The schedule for Msgr. Reilly’s Chicago visit is as follows:

Since the League’s Sharing the Pro-Life Message handbook was released two years ago, we’ve been thrilled at how well it’s been received by the pro-life movement.
We debuted it at the 2009 March for Life, and it’s been in great demand ever since. Our first print run of 10,000 copies went like hotcakes, and was exhausted in just over a month! We did another print run that year, which brought us up to 40,000 copies in print. Our third print run was in early 2010, which brought us up to 60,000 copies in print.
A couple months ago, just after New Year’s, we saw that orders kept coming in and showed no signs of stopping, and we realized our stock was about to dry up. So we set to work making revisions to make sure the latest edition would contain the most current information — updating statistics (especially in the “About Abortion” and “Planned Parenthood” sections), making sure the online sources cited are still live, tweaking selected responses, etc.
We then got in touch with Michelle Dellinger, the graphic artist who designed the original version of the Sharing the Pro-Life Message in 2009, and worked with her to make all the necessary revisions, and then sent them off to be printed.
Today, our printer sent over the very first copies of the 2011 edition. I just paged through it, and I’m happy to say it looks great!
I invite you to order one today for only $2. [Continue reading ...]
The Pro-Life Action League is excited to announce an affiliation with Matthew Kelly’s Dynamic Catholic apostolate. Let me tell you a little bit about this opportunity.
Last spring my daughter Cathy invited me to join her family for a talk by Matthew Kelly at a large parish in suburban Chicago. It was the third day of the mission and the church was packed to capacity—nearly a thousand people, many of whom had come for the first two days as well.
Long-time activist and friend of the League, Dan Gura, has published his first novel: God’s Avenger: Michael The Imprecatory Angel.
The story is a very timely one: God uses an angel to answer the prayers of the faithful, who petition Him for an end to abortion. Dan is very clear, though, that their prayers are answered by God and not by some action of their own.
Scripture plays an important role in the book and the reader is treated to two men of the cloth who could not be more different in their respect for the Word. [Continue reading ...]
On Saturday I attended the annual Respect Life Conference for Parish Committees, hosted by the Respect Life Office of the Archdiocese of Chicago (and co-sponsored by Couples for Christ Foundation for Family and Life).
The theme was Pope Benedict’s Encyclical, Caritas in Veritate (Charity in Truth).
It was an excellent conference covering a variety of topics, including: Leadership, Resources the Respect Life Office offers, and Assisted Suicide. [Continue reading ...]
One way to influence people you will never meet is to get pro-life books into your library. This involves a fairly small time commitment on your part, but has the potential to reach many people you will never meet on this side of Heaven.
Some libraries may have boxes on their homepage where you can suggest books they should buy. Or maybe they have a suggestion box you can slip a note in next time you go.
You may want to talk to your library about their donation policy before you buy the book yourself, since you’ll want to make sure it gets on the shelf. [Continue reading ...]

Particularly since this list is not (and could never be) exhaustive, I hope you will jump in and share your thoughts about which pamphlets you prefer to use when counseling so we can learn from each other.
First of all, you definitely need a pamphlet directing a woman to the nearest Pregnancy Resource Center. The PRC nearest the clinic may be willing to supply you with these pamphlets, though this can often be too expensive for them to provide.
