The pro-life community of Illinois’ Fox Valley showed what it’s made of this past Saturday during the monthly protest at Planned Parenthood Aurora, with a strong showing of 70 activists. We’ve held this protest every third Saturday of the month since November 2007.
August can be a tough time for pro-life activism, with summer vacations, high temperatures and back-to-school responsibilities tending to dampen participation.
So I issued a challenge to Fox Valley pro-lifers to make a special effort to come out for Saturday’s protest. I e-mailed them about the great turnout at the Rockford, Illinois Face the Truth Day earlier in the month, and said I’d hate to see the Fox Valley outdone. [Continue reading ...]
In response to the media coverage of the Pro-Life Action League’s visit to Batavia, Illinois on July 9 during our summer Face the Truth Tour, MySuburbanLife columnist Jerry Moore published a defense of the League’s constitutionally protected tactics.
Without taking sides on the abortion issue—or even saying whether or not he approved of the Truth Tour approach—Moore made the point that messages like ours—messages which many people simply don’t want to hear—are exactly what the Constitution was intended to protect. [Continue reading ...]

Today the Pro-Life Action League is heading to Rockford, Illinois for a 3-site Face the Truth Tour (itinerary here). Rockford is a hotspot in the abortion battle and today’s Tour is needed there.
You can be a part of today’s Tour even if you can’t be there in person. Here’s how:
When you’re out on the ground fighting to protect the lives of unborn babies, it’s good to know there’s a great pro-life team backing you up through prayers, encouragement and support.
Eric Scheidler with Fr Frank Pavone at the Priests for Life headquarters in New York
Last week it was my special privilege to visit the offices of Priests for Life in Staten Island, which I learned is known as the “forgotten borough” of New York City, having more in common with the Jersey suburbs. I was there to record an interview for Fr. Frank Pavone’s pro-life EWTN program, Defending Life, and to update the Priests for Life staff and pastoral associates on the League’s work.
With the amazing outreach that Priests for Life has, there are many partnership opportunities for the Pro-Life Action League. We’re the recognized national experts on the kind of creative, dynamic activism that constitutes the “next step” for many who are drawn into the pro-life movement through the outreach of Fr. Frank and the other priests and missionaries of Priests for Life. [Continue reading ...]
We pro-life activists are often criticized for using graphic abortion pictures in the course of our effort to change the hearts of our fellow citizens on abortion. We’re told that these images are “too disturbing” and that there must be “some other way” to get our point across.
But again and again, the power of graphic images is made manifest—not only through our own experience of how abortion pictures save babies from abortion out on the street, but across a whole host of other issues. [Continue reading ...]
Three generations of pro-life men: Eric, Joe and Nate Scheidler at a protest in 2004 [Photo by Danita Covington]
This weekend we celebrate Father’s Day, and I thought this would be a good opportunity to address a common objection raised by abortion advocates: that men, because they can’t get pregnant, have no business saying or doing anything about abortion.
Of course, that rule only applies to pro-life men. If a man supports abortion, he’s more than welcome to speak out and take action. No one on the other side objects to men acting as clinic escorts (or as we call them, “deathscorts”) or joining a counter-protest—let alone paying for an abortion.
But really, the idea that men should have no say in abortion because they can’t get pregnant is nonsense. And as a son and a husband, as the brother of three sisters and, above all, as the father of six daughters, I have a deep interest in women’s welfare. [Continue reading ...]
During the League’s Face the Truth Tour yesterday in Evanston, Illinois, I took a few moments to offer a suggestion on how to respond when people object to this particular pro-life campaign. My assistant Matt shot this footage and edited the video.
The most recent national poll by the Gallup polling company finds, for the second year running, that more Americans are calling themselves “pro-life” than “pro-choice.” They’re even calling pro-life the “new normal.”
As you might expect, pro-lifers have greeted these results with enthusiasm, while the pro-choice side has looked for ways to discount them.
On the Abortion Gang, a blog for “unapologetic activists for reproductive justice,” pro-choice blogger Reema criticizes pro-lifers—or “anti-choicers” as she calls them—for “going on and on” about the new poll numbers, despite the fact that many who call themselves pro-life are “exceptioneers,” who would not support an all-out ban on abortion. Pro-lifers protest Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards in Cedar Rapids, May 20 [Photo by Sam Scheidler]
On May 20, the Pro-Life Action League coordinated more than 150 pro-life activists from across Iowa and the Midwest in protesting an appearance by Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards in Cedar Rapids. The event was billed as a 30th anniversary celebration for Planned Parenthood of East Central Iowa—and we were there to deliver the message that abortion is nothing to celebrate.
The protest was a tremendous success, with great turnout and fantastic media coverage. The entire event was a testament to what pro-life activists can accomplish with careful planning and a healthy dose of divine grace.
I first learned about Cecile Richards’ scheduled appearance—and the protest being planned by Dubuque County Right to Life—from a post by Jill Stanek on her pro-life blog. Given my history with Richards, I was eager to take part, so I reached out to my colleague Steve Brody, executive director of Dubuque Country Right to Life, who graciously accepted my offer to help “welcome” Richards to Iowa.
