Choosing an Abortion = Choosing a Handbag?

Posted by John Jansen (August 19, 2011 at 2:46 pm)

There’s been a lot of attention recently on a ridiculous new social media campaign by Kenneth Cole titled, “What You Stand For” that, among other things, compares abortion to shopping.

On the “What You Stand For” site, clicking a button that says “Pro-Choice” brings up a a video in which a woman is shown agonizing over a decision — presumably, whether or not to have an abortion.

But then she is shown picking up a handbag, and then walks off.

The League’s Eric Scheidler was interviewed this week for a Fox News story about the new Kenneth Cole campaign:

“It so trivializes the issue. I think it would be offensive to anyone on either side of the abortion issue,” Eric Scheidler, the executive director of the Pro Life Action League, told FoxNews.com. “Even staunch supporters of abortion will admit an abortion is an anguishing decision and to compare it with buying a handbag is really offensive to women. Of course I also find it deeply offensive to the sanctity of the life that hangs in the balance.”

Indeed, many staunch “pro-choice” advocates do admit that having an abortion is an anguishing decision for a woman. This, of course, raises the question: Why is having an abortion such an anguishing decision?

If It’s Not a Baby, Why Is Abortion Such a Big Deal?

For pro-lifers, the answer is simple: Because a pregnant woman knows that what is inside her is not merely “tissue” or a clump of cells, but is actually a baby — her baby — and convincing herself to have an abortion, often due to extraordinary pressure or coercion, goes radically against what her conscience is telling her to do.

But pro-choicers have no good reason to believe abortion is an anguishing decision. Sure, they say that no woman takes an abortion decision lightly, but this really illustrates a gaping hole in their position.

Namely, if an embryo or fetus is not a person and is instead merely “potential life” — as the “pro-choice” movement claims, by and large — then what’s the big deal? Why should any woman anguish over the decision to have an abortion?

An Unborn Child: “Part of a Woman’s Body”?

Earlier this week RH Reality Check blogger Sunsara Taylor wrote:

The only basis for viewing the decision of a woman not to carry every fetus to term as a “moral” or “ethical dilemma” is the unscientific lie that treats fetuses like people, rather than as a subordinate part of a woman’s body.

That, in a nutshell, is the most commonly professed “pro-choice” position on the unborn: A fetus is a subordinate part of a woman’s body. Except it’s all too rare that this belief is stated with such brutal honesty.

Now, take this argument to its logical conclusion: If an embryo or fetus is merely a “subordinate part of a woman’s body,” then there is absolutely nothing wrong with abortion. In that case, it would be no different from having a tooth pulled, or having an appendectomy, and it certainly wouldn’t be cause for anguish.

Which brings us back to the Kenneth Cole video.

The clear and obvious purpose of the video is to propagandize the idea that choosing whether or not to have an abortion is, in a very real sense, the moral equivalent of choosing what type of handbag to buy.

In so doing, Kenneth Cole is self-evidently trivializing abortion — which, from a moral standpoint, is exactly what the “pro-choice” movement seeks to do.

I do like a lot of Kenneth Cole products, especially the shoes and leather jackets, but I stopped buying from the line several years ago due to their support for abortion and other Left Wing causes. Let us hope that Kenneth Cole and other designers will stop aligning themselves with these positions/causes and just make clothing.

Hollywood (et alii) needs to stay out of political issues, and ESPECIALLY PRIVATE ISSUES like abortion.

I still regret having abortions that were FORCED on me by my adopted mother (believe it or not, Catholic-Portuguese), especially as now I realize that she was jealous of me in many ways (especailly in having her OWN BABY, and my being blonde w/ Blue eyes, despite being part American Indian/Choctaw), and coercing me/threatening me that if I had a baby, I would be “cut off” and “disowned” by the family.
As a daughter of a highly prominent corporate family in CA, I was faced with other abuses and really WAS NOT ALLOWED to make my OWN CHOICES without SERIOUS reprimand/consequences, including corruptions that invovled FALSE ARREST and TOTALLY FALSE CHARGES by the DA (a TOTALLY CORRUPT friend of my own brother)!
I have seen unbelieveable corruption and abuses of the system, like NO ONE I HAVE EVER KNOWN! (The FBI was notified anonymously, but they arrested the Sheriff on unrelated charges of fraud, etc…Internal Affairs hid thefts of personal property and totally unwarranted assaults, amongst other policy violations and BLATANT CRIMES)…and YES, this DOES tie in with the abortion issue, because if I had HAD children, they would have wtinessed the NUMEROUS felonies committed against me to the point of NEVER HAVING ANY LEGAL PROTECTIONS OR RECOURSE as a DIRECT RESULT OF CORRUPTION and ABSUES in the SYSTEM!!!!!! Even Victim-Witness covered up the crimes after my brother’s corporate jet pilot atacked me in my OWN HOME and had been stalking me for months!! My father and brother BOTH protected themseleves through corruption of the system and the power they had to control the courts, etc!!! I am STILL in shock after 9 years, and leaving the state entirely! Incidently, the sheriff was released and then exonerated by a judge, and this was ANOTHER INJUSTICE!

I still feel that is the MOTHER’s RIGHT to choose whether or not she should be responsible for a life, especailyl considering the circulstances involved in brining a child INTO a totalyl dysfunctional family!…
I also feel that when one is NOT in a postion to be NOT BE ALLOWED TO FREELY CHOOSE, this should be dealt with criminally, as I had to endure even MORE ABUSES after getting pregnant. It’s like I had to “ask permission” to have a baby in my family…and my brother could always do whatever he wanted…even cheating in his marriage received PRAISE for him, but this was expected, especially where millions of dollars (over 50M) were invovled…wealthy families are VERY CONTOLLING and they basically can OWN/CONTROL PEOPLE, including their own children and any “policies” that might stand in the way of their own reputation, or reveal it!

I met my biological mother when I was 22 years old, and twice she said “it’s up to you”, but NEITHER MOTHER was supportive, and that is ANOTHER REASON I felt coerced to make the decision to have an abortion…and also realizing the superficial men I was invovled with at the time…who would have added to an already adverse situation.
The very account of ZELL influencing policy, is also in the same light! It may SEEM humanitarian, but it is REALLY SELFISH, and probably WHY she didnt have kids in the first place!

I think it is MUCH MORE HUMANITARIAN TO HELP THE LIVING, than it is to help the UNBORN!

Abortion or Adoption…Either way, the road is NOT GOD’s WILL!!!!

Unwanted children (especailly when unwanted by the prenant teen’s abusive and controlling parents) are RARELY EVER WORTH ANYTHING IN SOCIETY in the first place, and that is WHY abortion is NECESSARY!!!!! I still beleive that my children are better off being with God, than how they would have been treated by HUMANS…I NEVER want ANYONE to suffer the abuses I ahve had to endure, especially an innocent child, as I KNOW EXACTLY what that does to one’s SOUL!! I mourn for the loss of my children almost daily!!!!! THAT is the price you pay from a SELFISH, SELF-SERVING SOCIETY! PEOPLE are MEAN and CRUEL and onlycare as far as they WANT TO, or as faras it SERVES THEM…RARELY do people “LOVE”, or even CARE!!

    Sophia,

I’m terribly sorry to hear about the abortions you were forced to have.

You said that you mourn for the loss of your children every day…have you ever received post-abortion counseling? If not, would you be open to it? If you would be, I would strongly encourage you to contact the National Office of Post-Abortion Reconciliation & Healing. They can be reached at 1-800-593-2273, or by email at:
