TV Show Reveals A Truth About Chastity

Handing her the book, Hodgins asks Angela to read aloud the steamy scene that describes the intimate act that will always remind her of him.

If you’ve ever watched the Fox TV show “Bones,” you know that Dr. Temperance Brennan is a genius forensic anthropologist and a best-selling crime novelist.

A recent episode of the show (“The Bones on the Blue Line”) reveals the secret to her success: her friend, Angela, offers her advice to make her characters more believable and realistic.

The episode refers over and over to an intimate act that occurs on page 187. One woman even comments that she and her boyfriend tried it several times and they loved it.

Jack Hodgins, another worker in the lab, was the man who “invented” that particular act. When he finds out it was included in the book, is both pleased for the “recognition” and jealous that now tons of others are doing what, previously, “only he did.”

But what really struck me as significant was this parting barb he threw at ex-fiancee, Angela,

My advice? Only sleep with guys that can’t read. Because otherwise, you’ll never be rid of me.

The writers really nailed that one on the head, in my estimation. Likely they didn’t realize the truth underlying his comment, though.

Never Rid Of Your Partner

Our society tells us that we should “test drive” potential spouses. We should “make sure things work right” before we settle down together. And if you don’t like how things work—See ya!

But when we’re taught this, our teachers forget an underlying truth of life: When you give yourself to someone completely, you never get all of yourself back. Nor are you supposed to. Two become one flesh, the Bible tells us.

But just as Angela will imagine Hodgins when she is in bed with another man, so too will those who have chosen to be unchaste before marriage, even when they are finally with their spouses. (A great book on this topic is The Thrill of the Chaste, written by a woman who recognizes the emptiness of the promiscuous lifestyle.)

It’s not a shock to find that our culture has lied to us, but it is a shock to find such deep truth in a prime-time TV show.
