GavelToday in League HistoryNovember 20, 1985—League Director Joe Scheidler attends the trial of Richard Ragsdale, a Rockford, Illinois, abortionist accused of violating Illinois health regulations. The abortionist complains that having to follow new medical and safety guidelines would increase the cost of each abortion by over $47, and on that basis concludes he need not follow them. The case would eventually reach the U.S. Supreme Court, but be settled before a final ruling in a deal engineered by Illinois Attorney General Neil Hartigan, eager to court the “pro-choice” vote in a bid for governor.
