July 30, 1988—In response to a written request from League Director Joe Scheidler, Cardinal Joseph Bernardin celebrates a memorial Mass and officiates at the burial of over 2,000 aborted babies at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside, Illinois. The bodies had been retrieved from garbage drums at Vital-Med Lab in Northbrook, Illinois. The Cardinal tells reporters that he is simply performing a corporal work of mercy—burying the dead.
