Tremendous outcry has arisen in the past year after it was learned that the national office of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development has been funding groups that promote abortion, contraception, same-sex “marriage” and even legalized prostitution.
It’s painfully obvious that the CCHD is in need of reform, and in Chicago, its local Archdiocesan office has taken that responsibility very seriously.
Given the revelations about the CCHD’s history of supporting dubious organizations, it certainly has had its share of critics — as well it should. And to his great credit, Rey Flores, the new director of the Chicago CCHD office, has taken an irenic approach in reaching out to the most outspoken ones and asked them to suggest groups that they believe are deserving of grants from the Campaign.
A recent LifeSiteNews article spoke very favorably about the changes being made in the Chicago CCHD office under Flores’ leadership and noted that the reforms he is instituting locally would serve as a great example for the CCHD to follow nationwide.
Under Flores’ leadership, the Chicago CCHD office has committed itself to de-funding any organization that opposes Catholic teaching — especially regarding life and family issues — and, instead, to giving grants to local pro-life groups.
As a result, for the first time ever, the League is receiving a grant this year to promote sidewalk counseling. Other first-time grantees include the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Chastity Education Initiative and two networks of pregnancy resource centers — Aid for Women and the Women’s Center.
Shortly after Flores was hired by the Archdiocese of Chicago last year, League National Director Joe Scheidler said:
We strongly urge you to give Rey Flores a chance. Change has to start somewhere and sometime. I believe that somewhere is Chicago and the sometime is now.
Given the yeoman’s work Flores has done thus far, we reiterate our support for him and the authentic reform he is bringing to the Chicago CCHD.
To this end, we invite you to join us at this year’s Chicago CCHD Awards Event on Wednesday, September 1 at St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish in Chicago [see map here]. The theme for the evening is, appropriately enough, “Take a whole new look at the CCHD!”
The event will be hosted by Relevant Radio executive director Father Frank “Rocky” Hoffman, and will feature Mass celebrated by Bishop Francis Kane, with a dinner and recognition of grantees to follow.

[...] Pro Life Action League is optimistic that new Catholic Campaign for Human Development director, Rey Flores, will correct past abuses and dubious funding within the organization. In the past, the CCHD has come under fire for funding abortion, contraception, same-sex “marriage,” and legalized prostitution. Recently, the group has given grants toward sidewalk counseling, PRCs, and abstinence education. [...]

I was wondering about the things that Michael Voris said about CCHD in his most recent video clip on RealCatholicTV – his claim is that the CCHD continues to fund organizations that support abortion. Clearly, it is not the Chicago CCHD according to his video .. but CCHD in other parts of the country has not been fully reformed yet. We should definitely keep an eye on that.

“…And you who once were alienated and hostile in mind because of evil deeds
he has now reconciled in his fleshly body through his death, to present you holy, without blemish, and irreproachable before him,
provided that you persevere in the faith, firmly grounded, stable, and not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been preached to every creature under heaven, of which I, Paul, am a minister.” (Col 1:21-23)

Elizabeth:
I don’t know where these guys are getting their information, but nobody at CCHD Chicago or from the Archdiocese has said anything to us about withdrawing our grant (we’ve received half already, with the other half due in the Spring). In fact, when asked, they’ve said there’s nothing to these rumors.
What’s more, NONE of the reporters addressing this issue reached out to us for comment before publishing. That doesn’t give me much confidence in the accuracy of their claims.
It’s hard for me to imagine CCHD pulling our grant. They’re already fighting against a tarnished reputation, but can’t see how they’d recover from the fallout of yanking funding from a pro-life group.
