One way to decrease abortions, especially the late term ones, is to keep the abortionists from coming into your town or anywhere in your state.
Take the case of good old late-term abortion provider LeRoy Carhart. He had worked alongside Dr. George Tiller in Wichita, Kansas—helping him out doing late term abortions.
Then after Tiller was shot to death on May 31, 2009, Carhart announced that he would move right into Tiller’s mill and continue his late term abortion practice. But lo and behold, the Tiller family closed down the business and Carhart had to look elsewhere.
Carhart Searches for a Place To Hang His Hat
Rumor has it that he looked first for a location in Council Bluffs, Iowa, but there he might have to show a woman an ultrasound of her baby before he aborted it. The legislature was also discussing an ban on late term abortions in Iowa. No dice. Those are the abortions Carhart likes best.
Then Carhart made overtures to Indiana, but the pro-lifers there said they would get a law passed similar to Nebraska’s law on fetal pain. That plan fell through. So Carhart went to Ohio, and there he could find nothing, so that fell through. We still don’t know where he was planning to do his dirty work in Ohio, but he didn’t stay there long.
One problem Carhart has is that he can’t get hospital privileges in any state, and hospital privileges are important because in emergencies the abortionist can send his victim to a hospital near the clinic in case of serious injury where medical attention can be given the woman injured by the abortionist.
Carhart Settles on Dilapidated Maryland Mill
So finally he went to Maryland to take over a dilapidated mill in Germantown, Maryland, the Germantown Reproductive Health Services, which is affiliated with the National Abortion Federation (NAF). Troy Newman of Operation Rescue calls most of the clinics affiliated with NAF filthy, with a record of representing “dangerous abortionists.”
Incidentally, it was in a taxi to New Orleans several years ago, to spy on a NAF convention, that I spent a half-hour with Tiller discussing the use of ultrasound for abortions. Tiller was pushing ultrasound, he said, because you could see how the fetus was positioned, and could see if you left any fetal parts in the uterus.
But now Tiller’s pal is planning to work in an already existing abortion mill in Maryland. Newman says Operation Rescue is working with Maryland and Washington DC pro-life groups to halt Carhart’s plans to do late-term abortions in Germantown, through peaceful, legal means. Knowing some of the pro-life activists like Jack Ames and Kathy Roth out in that area, I have no doubt that Carhart will be looking for another abortion clinic very soon.
