On November 29, America lost a great man: former Congressman Henry Hyde. “Henry Hyde is revered by the pro-life movement for his tireless efforts to protect the innocent, defenseless life in the womb,” said Joseph M. Scheidler, National Director of the Pro-Life Action League.

Cong. Hyde led the Congressional move to prohibit the use of tax dollars to pay for abortions, drafting what came to be known as the Hyde Amendment in 1976.

Scheidler said, “I have often quoted Henry’s words directed to pro-life activists:”

When the time comes as it surely will, when we face that awesome moment, the final judgment, I’ve often thought, as Fulton Sheen wrote, that it is a terrible moment of loneliness. You have no advocates, you are there alone standing before God and a terror will rip through your soul like nothing you can imagine.

But I really think that those in the pro-life movement will not be alone. I think there will be a chorus of voices that have never been heard in this world but are heard beautifully and clearly in the next world and they will plead for everyone who has been in this movement.

They will say to God, “Spare him because he loved us,” and God will look at you and say not, “Did you succeed?” but “Did you try?”

Henry Hyde

“Henry Hyde was a hero to the pro-life movement and a particular friend to me,” said Scheidler. “During the NOW v. Scheidler RICO trial in 1998 Cong. Hyde testified in federal court on my behalf stating:

“He is my hero. He has the guts that I wish more of us had… Had people, feeling as does Mr. Scheidler, surrounded and even obstructed the entrance to Dachau or Auschwitz, there may have been fewer people incinerated there.”

“It is a sad day for America. We have lost a truly great statesman and patriot,” said Scheidler. “He is surely hearing that ‘chorus of voices’ right now.”
