In October, Joe and I were invited to do a "doubleheader" by Right to Life of Owensboro, Kentucky. John Howard met the us at the airport in Evansville, IN and drove us to Owensboro—about an hour drive. John has been involved in pro-life for over thirty years and had served has Joe's driver when he spoke in Owensboro in October 1992. They spent the hour's drive reviewing their years in the fight for life.

Joe was the featured speaker on Thursday evening, October 2, for the annual fundraising banquet, held in the Owensboro Sportscenter. The audience of over four hundred was overwhelmingly young professional couples, which was very encouraging to see. The banquet was coordinated by Dana Goodlet, Owensboro Right to Life executive director, working with Maggie Knoop.

Ann Trains Sidewalk Counselors

Although there is no abortion clinic in Owensboro, Dana and Maggie invited me to give a sidewalk counseling workshop the morning after the banquet. Several young women drive to Louisville—a two-hour drive—every week to pray at the abortion clinic. They were anxious to start reaching out to the women who were seeking abortions, and wanted some expert training in sidewalk counseling.

Before going to the Right to Life office for the sidewalk counseling seminar, the Scheidlers attended Mass at the Carmel Home, a wonderful retirement and convalescent home run by the Carmelite sisters. They were invited to join the sisters and residents for a great southern breakfast. Then Sr. M. Frances Teresa, a radio talk-show host, interviewed Joe for two upcoming radio programs.

In July the League staff was joined by Corrina Gura, daughter of stalwart activist Dan Gura and an experience activist in her own right. Corrina has participated in innumerable League protests over the year and also brings the experience of teaching debate and public speaking at her undergraduate alma mater, Augustana College. Corrina also attended Baylor University, earning a Master of Arts degree.

Corrina has been a tremendous asset, contributing to critical projects like the Face the Truth Tour, the ongoing protests in Aurora and the national sidewalk counseling database, which with her help was finally completed this fall. Corrina gave her first talk with the League—on the need for pro-life activism—at the Joliet Catholic Women's Conference on October 19.

Welcome aboard, Corrina!
