Aurora Settlement Agreement: Securing Pro-Lifers' Civil Rights

Gavel

In August 2007, Eric Scheidler filed a federal lawsuit against the City of Aurora, Illinois, over numerous violations of the civil rights of pro-life activists opposing the construction of Planned Parenthood's abortion center in that city. The City ultimately agreed to settle the suit in a 2010 Settlement Agreement that recognized and secured pro-lifers' rights.

Since that time, relations between the police and pro-lifers protesting, praying and counseling at Planned Parenthood's Aurora center have been cooperative. League staff, City officials and high ranking police meet quarterly to discuss any minor problems, review police training and plan for future activities.

This Agreement could become a model for other cities dealing with protest activity at abortion facilities.
